Alexander Fischer is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Shiv Nadar University, Chennai. He holds two degrees from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LLM and BA in Anthropology and Law) and two degrees from the University of Heidelberg (Dr. rer. pol. and MA in Political Science). Before joining Shiv Nadar School of Law, Alexander Fischer was a Professor at Jindal Global Law School (2017–2024), a Lecturer at SOAS School of Law, University of London (2005–2016), and a faculty member at the South Asia Institute, University of Heidelberg (2001–2005).
His research focuses on comparative constitutional law, with a particular emphasis on India. He has held visiting positions at the Global Legal Studies Center, University of Wisconsin Law School (2012) and the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University (2004–2005). His research has been supported by fellowships from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
His latest publication is the co-edited volume, State and Society in South Asia: Themes of Assertion and Recognition (Samskriti, New Delhi, 2014). He has also contributed to academic publishing as an Associate Series Editor for Constitutional Systems of the World (Hart Publishing, 2007–2011) and an Associate Editor for the Heidelberg Papers in South Asian and Comparative Politics (2002–2006).
