Shyamala is a writer, artist and scholar, who has been working as an independent researcher. Her research is primarily in the field of popular culture, with a focus on digital and transmedia narratives, critical race studies and feminist/queer studies. In the creative field, she has performed in, directed, and written multiple plays, and has previously published regularly on Fanhackers (a site dedicated to bridging the gap between academic publications in the field of fan studies and the fans themselves), and youngadulting.ca (a site dedicated to serious reviews of young adult novels). As lecturer of writing at the Shiv Nadar School of Law, Shyamala hopes to help students reframe the skill of writing as an iterative instead of an inherent process. She envisions the classroom as a community-building project, where students not only learn how to communicate with each other, but also respect each other’s voices through constant peer feedback.
