Inauguration of the Negotiation and Mediation Society

The Negotiation and Mediation Society of Shiv Nadar School of Law  (Society) held its first orientation session on 9 October 2026. The session was presented by the student co-heads, Adhya Datla, Narain Saravanan and Raja C, under the guidance of Faculty Coordinator Prof. Aparna Babu George.

The orientation introduced the Society’s focus areas: forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution and transactional law, including pre-contract negotiations, contract drafting and post-contract matters. The session also discussed the relevance of these areas to legal practice and the importance of developing practical skills alongside classroom learning.

The Society’s co-heads also highlighted how the Society would differ from traditional mooting activities. While mooting focuses on researching legal issues, constructing arguments and defending a position, the Society aims to provide students with opportunities to engage in discussions, negotiate terms, draft agreements and work towards practical solutions. Through these activities, students will be encouraged to develop communication, decision-making and commercial thinking skills.

Under the theme “From Classroom to Deal Table,” the Society outlined its proposed activities, which include training workshops and mock sessions, practitioner speaker sessions, and a Contract Drafting and Negotiation Competition planned for the next semester. The workshops will involve working through problem briefs, drafting exercises, mock negotiations and feedback sessions. Practitioner interactions will also provide students with an opportunity to learn about negotiation and transactional work from professionals in the field.

The session concluded with an interactive discussion, during which students raised questions, shared their thoughts and expressed their interest in the Society’s proposed activities. A small high tea with snacks was arranged for the students, providing an informal setting for further conversations and an opportunity to exchange ideas about the Society, its activities and the areas they would like to explore.

The orientation marked the beginning of the Society’s activities at the law school. Moving forward, the Society hopes to organise opportunities for students to learn, practise and engage with negotiation, mediation and transactional law beyond the classroom.
